What is Mattatuck?
The name 'Mattatuck' originates from an Indian word 'Matetacoke' or 'Matitacoocke' or 'Mattatuckokë' roughly translated to mean 'the place without trees' or 'the badly wooded land'.
The term appears on an Indian deed of 1657 and in the Colonial records of 1673 describing an area that today is known as Greater Waterbury in Connecticut.
As Connecticut's 4th largest city, Waterbury is rich in history and has long had an ethnically diverse population.
